Prioritizing in Moments of Bounty

Another Friday night, another week flown by, filled to the brim with all the bounty of August–a freezer organized and stocked with peaches and corn, jars of salsa canned, good times with family and friends… Red ripe tomatoes plucked from the garden and frozen to be made into pizza sauce at a later time.

Again we are away from home celebrating family at a cabin. This time our babies are with us, sleeping soundly in strange cribs in our basement bedroom.

My day of preparing food and packing is done. Now I can sit and relax and reflect.

Did I love my babies, and my God, and my husband, and my family and friends with my whole heart, and a focused smile, and every scrap of energy I had, right in the midst of crushed crackers on the floor, and delays, and small and large worries, and not enough time to type out the blog post I was going to write, for the second week in a row? Did I rejoice in the bounty?

I hope that I did. I hope that I will rejoice yet more and more in the weeks ahead.

Here is a poem I wrote recently about priorities:

PRIORITIES

Coffee cup, Bible-case, toddler twins, and I,
Filled the love seat full to overflowing.
I set down the Bible (for fear of its ruin)
And clung to my hand-painted coffee cup, Precious and precarious…
I could not hold both.

Sipping coffee, I ponder
About priorities, precious mugs of steaming brew, And the Word of Life inside an aqua cover.
I set down my coffee…
I could not hold both.

  1. Love the poem. And maybe I should put down my phone and chatter with my preschooler girls…. I can’t pay attention to both. 🙂

    1. Yes! I feel this way too sometimes, with my phone and my children.

  2. A belated comment, but I heartily affirm your prioritizing the Word of God! Amen.
