Celebrating September

This month has brought cool, crisp mornings that fade into warm days of sunshine and blue skies. The babies and I spend hours in our little backyard, revelling in our vibrant world of greens and reds and blues, the dew beneath our feet in the morning, and the loving God that gives us these gifts.

We pick tomatoes as they turn from green to red. Little Miss always follows right behind and begs to help carry the ripening fruit in her soft little hands. Green cherry tomatoes litter my lawn, left behind by tiny fingers that can’t resist the pearly green balls growing on plants.

Today we cooked up some tomatoes and canned pizza sauce. Then we had pizza for supper, to sample our labors… (I say “we” and “our”, because everything a mom does is plural, right?)

A volunteer pumpkin plant sprung up in my patch and overshadowed the few pepper plants that hadn’t been eaten. Eventually I ferociously trimmed it back, but not before it gave us some little white pumpkins. I turned one of them into a little lamp with fairy lights.

Candles glow with warmth and coziness on my kitchen  counter and coffee bar, while I sip coffee and make breakfast for my family on some of these cool mornings.

I’ve been loving fresh tomatoes in BLTs or salads. Ben eats whole tomatoes sliced on a plate and slathered with mayo.

Soup and bread inspire cozy feelings on a cooler evening and help me look forward with anticipation to the colder days that are coming. The soup pictured below is an offspring of this Chinese Noodle soup. I linked my Dutch oven bread recipe in last week’s post.

Today I thank God for all these gifts he gives in this season… I thank God that He is beautiful and kind enough to give good gifts in every season, that his gentleness never leaves us… That he shares these beauties with both the just and the unjust, and that He delights to share it with me and mine!
