One Small Moment

It is about five till 11:00 on a Friday morning. My brownies are cooling on the stove, and my bread is rising. The counter is cluttered with dirty dishes; the couch covered with books and toys. My baby snoozes against me in her carrier. And I am sitting on the floor, finally braiding Ellie’s hair and singing “Climb, climb, up sunshine mountain…”

“Mom, sing the mountain song.” Ellie requests.

I assume she means the sunshine mountain song.

“No, the bear one!”

Obligingly, I sing a few rounds about the bear going over mountains and seeing more mountains and going over the mountains.

“And now I’m bored of this song!” I sing to finish the verse, preventing the monotonous bear from climbing another mountain, as I near the end of braid number two.

“Mom, Mom, are you bored of that song?” Teddy asks loudly from the corner, where he is busy “working”.

“Yes, I’m bored of that song.”

“Mom, is the bear bored?”

“Yes, the bear is bored. He wants to do something else, like braiding Ellie’s hair or making bread.”

“But Mom, he doesn’t have hands, so he can’t!”

“Oh, you are right Teddy, what does the bear want to do?”

Teddy doesn’t know or forbears to reply. Ellie stuffs her animal sewing cards back in the bag with the strings. “I am bored of this, and the aminals are bored too!” she says.

Thankfully, I am done combing her hair.
