How to Make a Deluxe Dessert for Toddlers

At lunchtime today, I filled two glass yogurt jars, small but sturdy, with toddler-sized servings of applesauce. Inspired to greater heights, I took from the fridge the almost-empty can of whipped cream and sprayed it in a fluffy mound on top. Then I picked up the cinnamon shaker and, under watchful toddler eyes, dusted the creamy white with spice… My toddlers have not lived long enough to prefer pomp and circumstance to simple home-spun happiness; they enjoyed that applesauce immensely. How is it that I, jaded and ungrateful, forget to smile with joy and thankfulness when God gives me not only necessary sustenance, but also whipped cream on top?

And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”
